Prunes have long been known to be a home remedy for constipation, they also have been called dried plums. It is one of the healthiest fruits and should be part of your healthy diet. It is well know that you can buy all kinds medications to help when your constipated. It is far more healthy if you include them in your diet. You can buy prunes that are ready to eat and its much cheaper then buying over the counter medications. Prunes contain three different kinds of ingredients that help your digestive system working correctly. They are high in fiber which is needed to keep you from being constipated.

Insoluble fiber in the fruit stays in the digestive tract and soaks up water to make stool easier to pass.
Prunes also contain soluble fiber which helps lower cholesterol which should be part of a healthy diet. They also contain a natural sugar, sorbitol which also soaks up water. Research has shown they contain fifteen percent sorbitol which is great and potent for relieving constipation. They help the stimulate the intestine making it contract which helps you go to the bathroom. It is recommended that if you are having trouble going to the bathroom try eating two to five prunes a day.

As with most fruits they contain vitamins and minerals. You get a lot of health benefits from eating prunes. One of the nutrients that you get is beta-carotene an antioxidant and potassium which helps keep blood pressure down. You can drink the juice but it has less fiber then the whole fruit. The juice does contain a right amount of vitamin C. If you can it is better to eat the whole fruit to get the best benefits for your health.

Most of the time it is best to eat them in the morning. Many people pureed them to replace butter, and oil in baked goods. This can cut fat by ninety percent without losing the rich taste that usually comes from the fat. You can put prunes in a blender to make the prune puree which will replace more and more fat in margarine and butter. Any left over can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator.
